With a background in graphic design, I learned early on that design is more than just aesthetics — it’s visual communication and problem solving. My design approach begins with asking questions (some may say too many), gathering data and feedback (internal & external, qual & quan), and partnering closely with PM & Dev throughout the process (it doesn’t matter how “awesome” the design is if it doesn’t meet customer and business goals, or cannot be built in a reasonable number of sprints).
Call me old fashioned, but I like to start with pencil & paper, organizing requirements & concepts before moving onto talking with customers, sketching out ideas, and then onto pixels. I always strive to deliver at least 2-3 options, from a more conservative solution to a more extreme concept. This helps bring stakeholders along on the journey and I find we usually end up somewhere in the middle.
Outside of design (does that even exist?), my primary interest is probably my cats. My wife and our dog are also near the top of my list, and we spend a lot of time going to Dog Beach and camping in my ‘89 Westy. I enjoy practicing yoga and meditation (I received my 200hr CYT after a month-long study in Peru’s Sacred Valley), and have been building quite the art collection (both on my walls and tattooed across 60-70% of myself).
